What is GERD?
GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease, occurs when stomach acid frequently flows back into the esophagus, causing heartburn, regurgitation, and throat discomfort. While medications can help manage symptoms, they often offer only temporary relief and don’t address the underlying cause of reflux.
When is Surgery Considered for GERD?
- Symptoms persist despite long-term use of acid-reducing medication
- Reflux returns quickly after stopping medication
- Side effects or long-term concerns from using proton pump inhibitors (PPIs)
- Structural issues such as a weak valve (LES) or hiatal hernia
- Complications like esophagitis, strictures, or Barrett’s Esophagus
GERD Procedure: Nissen Fundoplication
Before the Procedure
You will need to fast for 8 hours before surgery and may need to stop certain medications like aspirin. Most patients should prepare for a 2–3 day hospital stay.
During the Procedure
The surgery is performed under general anaesthesia using keyhole incisions on your abdomen. The surgeon wraps the top part of your stomach around your esophagus to prevent acid reflux.
After the Procedure
You’ll be monitored as you recover, start on a soft or liquid diet, and should avoid heavy lifting or strenuous activity for at least a week.
