What Is a Colonoscopy?
A colonoscopy is a safe and effective procedure that allows your doctor to examine the inside of your large intestine using a thin, flexible camera. It helps detect inflammation, polyps, bleeding, and early signs of colorectal cancer.
Your doctor may recommend a colonoscopy if you’re experiencing any of the following symptoms:
- Blood in your stool
- Unexplained abdominal pain
- Persistent diarrhoea or constipation
- Changes in bowel habits
- Unexplained weight loss
It is also commonly done as a routine screening for individuals aged 50 and above, even without symptoms.
Colonoscopy Preparation
Proper preparation is key to a successful colonoscopy. Here’s what to expect in the days leading up to your procedure:
2–3 Days Before:
Start a low-fibre diet — avoid fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and dried fruits.
1 Day Before:
Stop solid foods and have only clear liquids or soft foods like porridge or soup. Avoid black coffee or tea.
Night Before:
Take the prescribed laxative to cleanse your colon. We’ll guide you through the process.
Day of Procedure:
Please fast for 8 hours – no food or drinks. You’ll be sedated, so arrange for someone to accompany you home after the procedure.
